How To Choose The Right Kitchen Sink
The sink is a vital part of your kitchen. It plays a role in the preparation and cleanup of nearly every meal -- not to mention washing hands, watering houseplants and maybe even bath time for your baby or small pet.
With all that's riding on your sink choice, it's worth thinking carefully about which one to install. Here are a few functional and aesthetic factors to consider when you're ready to select your next kitchen sink.
1. Single vs. Double Basin Sink
Single Basin
- Pros: They take up less space but big pans can still be washed easily.
- Cons: You can't separate clean and dirty dishes or contaminants like thawing meat.
Double Basin
- Pros: One side is your dedicated disposal sink. It's also easier to wash and dry dishes.
- Cons: It's harder to wash large pots and this style might not be a good choice for small kitchens.
Below is a quick graphic that gives a visual of the pros and cons of the single vs double basin sink.
2. Installation Style
Knowing the right sink style for your kitchen streamlines the selection process. There are three basic kitchen sink types to choose from:
- Top mount: This is the easiest kind of sink to install. The outward-folded lip at the top of the rim overlaps the edges of your counter. Caulk and gravity hold it in place.
- Undermount: The undermount sink is installed from beneath the counter and secured in place with clips. This style takes up less room than a top-mount sink.
- Flush mount: As the name implies, this sink is flush against the counter, creating a clean edge. The sink may or may not be the same material as the countertop.
